Our First Glimpse: The 3D Scan That Started Everything

Today I met my son for the first time… through what looks suspiciously like a tiny, very adorable hologram. That 3D ultrasound image popped up on the screen and my brain just kind of short-circuited. There he was, this little person, still hanging out in the womb, already pulling the exact same serious face I make when I’m concentrating. It’s wild to think that one day he’ll be able to look back at that picture and see where he started, like, “Dude, here you are before you even knew what pizza was.”

For the record, the scan is undeniable proof: kid, you are not adopted. You’ve got my expression, the same weirdly intense eyebrow situation, and that “I’m judging you” resting face. But then there’s your nose, and that is 100% your mum’s — which, to be fair, is an upgrade on mine, so you’re welcome. You looked so small and yet somehow already completely yourself. I don’t know who you’re going to be or what you’ll love, but I do know this: I loved you the second I saw that blurry little 3D face, and I’m going to spend the rest of my life trying to be the dad you already deserve.
