A Few Guidelines I Learned to Expect

Before becoming a dad, I thought I could count on certain things: a little sleep, a little peace, an outing that stayed on schedule. I’ve learned to let all of those expectations go out the window. Never assume a guaranteed moment of rest, a quiet afternoon, an uninterrupted meal, or anything else. With a child, plans can change in a heartbeat—and sometimes the change is the whole story.

The other lesson is to appreciate every stage while I’m in it. Even the exhausting, messy, confusing parts pass much faster than I expect. One day I’m wishing for a little more independence, and the next I’m missing the tiny version of that same child who needed me for everything. So I’m trying to stay present, take in what’s right in front of me, and remember that each stage is temporary—and worth noticing.

Most of all, say thank you to your wife and appreciate her for everything she sacrifices. Parenthood is a shared journey, and recognizing the love, effort, and sacrifices she makes can mean more than you realize.
